The Haunted Pepper Cannister Church of Ireland

St. Stephen's Church, or more popularly known as the Pepper Canister or Pepper Pot Church in Dublin, Ireland, is a known site for  ghostly activity.

It gets it’s nickname since the church spire looks like a pepper canister.

The church, built in 1821 by John Bowden and Joseph Welland. It is located on Mount Street Upper has a sinister reputation.

The capital city of Dublin has a strong connection with the paranormal. It was home to Bram Stoker and Sheridan Le Fanu - both famous horror writers.

The locals say if you walk around the church three times, you'll come face-to-face with no other than the devil himself!

The Very Haunted Lemp Mansion in St. Louis Never Ceases to Amaze

By Margie Kay

The Lemp Mansion, St. Louis, Missouri   Photo: "Lemp-mansion" by MattHucke - Own work. Licensed under CC BY 3.0 via Commons - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lemp-mansion.jpg#/media/File:Lemp-mansion.jpg

I had the good fortune to visit and explore the Lemp Mansion in 2012 along with my friend Debbie Ziegelmeyer. After having lunch in the restaurant on the lower level, we moved upstairs to complete our much-anticipated ghost hunt, with equipment in hand. Before mentioning the results, however, lets begin with some history of the place.

The home was built in 1868 by St. Louisian Jacob Feickert. William J. Lemp, owner of the largest brewery in St. Louis, and his wife, Julia, moved into the mansion in 1876. The Lemp family  lived in the house until 1949 when Charles Lemp committed suicide.

William Lemp, the son of a successful grocer and German beer brewer, continued in his father’s footsteps, expanding the company. In 1911, the Lemps contracted major renovations to the home to include conversion of some spaces into offices for the Lemp Brewery.

William brewed and bottled his beer in the same facility to meet growing demand for the product. In 1878 he installed the first refrigeration machine in an American brewery, following with refrigerated railway cars, in order
to transport the beer across the States. Not long after, Lemp Beer was sold worldwide.

In 1892, the William J. Lemp Brewing Company was founded from the Western Brewery with William as President, his son William Jr. as Vice-President, and his son Louis as Superintendent.
William J. "Billy" Lemp, Jr., born on August 13, 1867, went to St. Louis University and then studied the art of brewing. However, it was William Sr.'s fourth son, Frederick, born in 1873, whom he wanted to take over the company. But Frederick had heart issues and died on December 12, 1901 of heart failure due to complication of diseases.

William Sr. became distraught over his son’s death, and his health slowly deteriorated. To make matters worse, his best friend Frederick Pabst died on February 1, 1904. On the morning of February 13, 1904, William Lemp killed himself by gunshot, and died at 10:15 a.m.

On November 7, 1904, William J. "Billy" Lemp, Jr., took over the brewing company as president. Billy had married Lillian Handlan five years earlier, and they moved to a new home at 3343 South 13th Street.

Williams wife, nicknamed the “Lavender Lady” for her love of the color lavender filed for divorce in 1908, charging Billy with desertion, cruel treatment and other indignities. Lillian was granted her divorce and full custody of William III with Billy given visitation rights.

Elsa Lemp Wright, the youngest child of William Lemp Sr., filed for divorce against Thomas Wright. The divorce was granted, however, the couple reconciled and remarried in 1920. After an argument with her husband, Elsa shot herself while in bed at her home on Hortense Place.

In the 1910s The Lemp Brewery suffered when Prohibition began. The brewery was shut down and the Falstaff trademark was sold to Lemp's friend, "Papa Joe" Griesedieck. The brewery was later sold at auction for pennies on the dollar. On December 29, 1922, Billy Lemp shot himself in his office, which today is the dining room on the left side of the door on the main floor.

Billy Lemp had one son, William J. Lemp III, licensed the Lemp name to Central Breweries of East St. Louis in 1939. Central Breweries changed their name to the William J. Lemp Brewing Company, and began a grand marketing campaign resulting in increased sales of the new Lemp Beer. The contract was terminated by Ems Brewing, which bought out Lemp in 1945.

The Lemp Mansion is currently a restaurant and inn owned by the Pointer family. Historical and haunted tours are offered, and it is a venue for murder mystery dinner theatre and Halloween parties.

The Investigation:

Debbie and I brought along a EMF meter, two digital thermometers, and two cameras for our impromptu ghost hunt rather than bringing the usual bags of equipment. We were not spending the night and didn’t have much time. However, we would not be disappointed.

While sitting in the dining room eating lunch, some movement caught my eye to the right, and I looked, thinking it was the waiter. However, there was nothing there, so I just kept on with our conversation, anticipating that we might capture a spirit in the restaurant, and kept my camera handy. A few minutes later, the movement occurred again, this time a tall dark shadow moved from across the room and through a doorway and towards the staircase in the hall. I took a quick photo but nothing appeared in the photograph.

Next, we moved to the upstairs area to Elsa’s room. As we walked up the stairs I felt a presence on the staircase. Upon entering Elsa’s room, Debbie and I both felt a presence walk into the room, and I felt something walk through me. Debbie’s thermometer started to drop, and finally stopped at a full 10 degrees lower than the original room temperature. It started out at 72 degrees and dropped to 62 degrees. My EMF meter began to show high readings. I snapped a picture of the fireplace and mirror (see photo on page 11) and there are some streams of light in the mirror which I cannot explain. This type of image has appeared before in photographs of mirrors (see the article on Haunted Deadwood in a previous issue of Un-X News Magazine).

Suite with unexplained white streaks in

The presence stayed in the room for several minutes, then as quickly as it came, it was gone again. We took photos and moved on to the hall, and once again, I felt a presence on the stairs so snapped some photos. In one picture there is an unexplained white snake-like stream of light for which I can find no explanation. The photo taken right afterwards shows nothing. If it were something mundane it would surely have shown up in both photographs.

Our next move was to visit the basement area. Once again, a few minutes after arriving I again felt and saw a presence - this time of an older man wearing a black suit. He was very imposing. I saw him walk from one side of the room, straight in to the bar area and walk through the closed door. I could tell that this was something he did on a regular basis.
The bartender told me that this spot is the old tunnel entrance that went underground to the brewery. Apparently, Mr. Lemp did not want to go out in public to visit his brewery every day. This is something that is not generally known, so  it confirms what I saw. There was a presence of a younger man in the room as well.

Unexplaned ghostly lights appear in the lower part of this photo of the staircase.

After our visit to this site I can say that the Lemp Mansion is definitely haunted and worth a visit for any serious ghost hunter.  I’m looking forward to going back.

The Lemp Mansion offers regular and haunted tours and special events. The home may be rented for special events and parties. Every year the Lemp has a Halloween Bash which is touted as being one of the best Halloween parties in the country. Visit www.lempmansion.com for more information.

The Haunted Chevy Tahoe that Moves on its Own

A vehicle in Sugar Creek, Missouri apparently has a mind of its own or is haunted by a spirit. The 2015 Chevy Tahoe, owned by Tarrence T. recently started acting strangely - but only when he talks about selling or trading in the vehicle.

The first incident occurred several months ago while Tarrence was driving down the street with his wife in the passenger seat. He brought up the subject of trading the vehicle for a larger pickup truck when suddenly the music he was playing stopped and the word "Message" scrolled across the screen of the radio. A few minutes later, the radio came back on and the message disappeared from the screen. The couple said that nothing like that happened before.

Video of ghost car moving on its own

On January 24, 2019 the vehicle again reacted to Tarrence and his wife, yet they didn't know about it until an hour later. The couple has a security camera system installed on their house with a monitor in their living room. Tarrence's wife decided to scroll back and look at the past couple of hours when she noticed the Tahoe suddenly move backward on the driveway. They looked at the time stamp and realized that the vehicle moved at that exact time they had been discussing selling the vehicle again.

The couple has ruled out any possibility of the vehicle having an issue that would cause it to move independently. It was in park and had been parked for hours on the driveway that has a very small slope before it moved. They checked for any recalls, and there are none. But that was not the end of the story - the exact same thing happened a week later when the subject of selling came up again!

After the three strange events occurred only while the couple discussed getting rid of the vehicle, they are of the opinion that it is just too coincidental and that the Tahoe just does not want to be sold.

Can vehicles have intelligence or is this one haunted by a spirit?  Who knows, but one thing is certain - this is a highly unusual set of circumstances.

Ghost Tours at the Haunted 1906 Bungalow House

Ghost Tours at the Very Haunted 1906 Bungalow House
Independence, MO 64050
$30 pp

Hosted by the Ginger House Museum and Quest Investigation Group. Join Margie Kay for an evening at the Ginger House - where there has been a lot of paranormal activity. Bring your camera and EMF meter if desired. Adults over 16 only. Limited to 12 persons per tour. Must register in advance.

We have evidence of paranormal activity at this house. The home was recently renovated and turned into a museum. It was opened to the public in August of 2018. Ginger Rogers, best known for her dancing and movies with Fred Astaire, was born in this 1906 home on July 16, 1911, and she visited the home several times.

While doing renovations, the contractor noticed strange noises and lights flickering, but when the wiring was upgraded the flickering did not stop. Paranormal teams have investigated the site, with lots of phenomena occurring and captured on film.

This is by far, one of the most haunted sites I've ever investigated, and every time we've entered the house something strange happens.

Tour Company Offers Ghost Tours in Kansas

As the days grow shorter and cooler, thoughts turn to all things fall and Halloween.

Offering nearly a dozen different tours around the state, Ghost Tours of Kansas offers several ghost tours in the Kansas City area including Lawrence, Shawnee, Leavenworth, and Kansas City, Kansas.
“There is so much haunted history in the area and we have collected some great stories,” said ghost tour guide Beth Kornegay.  “We hear about new stories and experiences year-round so no two tours are ever the same.  History is tied to many of those stories and we’ve done extensive research not only about the hauntings, but also the history that may have impacted the ghostly happenings.”

How they collect stories is something that truly sets Ghost Tours of Kansas apart from other ghost tour companies.  Anyone can google ‘Kansas City ghosts’ and read some stories or local legends about area ghosts, but owner Cathy Ramirez and her team collects stories from the actual people who have experienced hauntings or ghostly happenings.  Those stories are shared with tour guests during the bus ride to various haunted locations around each tour city.

“We hear from business owners who have had experiences with the ghosts in their business,” Ramirez said.  “We don’t include individual homes on our tours, but we do talk to businesses who want to share their ghost happenings with us.”

Another differentiating factor of Ghost Tours of Kansas is that the company has paranormal investigators and local psychics who work with them to investigate several locations in each tour city.  The results of those investigations are shared during the tour.

Each tour lasts between 90 minutes to two hours and tour guests will get out in at least two locations to explore on their own or with one of the tour guides.  Each tour has at least one cemetery that has ghostly happenings that tour guests can explore on their own.  Guests are encouraged to take photos and see if anything unexpectedly shows up, which has happened on more than one occasion.

During a Shawnee tour last year, a tour guest took a photo and a ghostly green hand showed up in the photograph.  The photo was so clear that the folds of skin between the fingers can be seen.  It was as if someone was standing behind the person who took the picture and put their hand over her shoulder.  Another photo was taken a few years ago in a Lawrence cemetery during a tour and a full body apparition was caught by a photographer.  Those pictures, and other ghost photos captured on other tours, are shown during each ghost tour.

“We never tell people that they should believe in ghosts, we only tell the story and present the evidence that has been collected,” said Kornegay.  “We want each person to decide on their own, but people generally walk away as a believer.”

For a complete list of all tour locations, dates, and times, visitwww.ghosttoursofkansas.com or follow Ghost Tours of Kansas on Facebook.  Tickets must be purchased ahead of time and on-line at the website to ensure sufficient space is available on the bus.  Especially during October, tours tend to sell out quickly so early ticket purchase is encouraged.

The Haunted Ginger Rogers House

The Haunted Ginger Rogers House
Independence, Missouri
By Margie Kay
Copyright 2017

In February of 2016, my real estate investment company was lucky to purchase the house where Ginger Rogers was born on July 16, 1911. It is a tiny 800 square-foot Craftsman Bungalow in Independence, Missouri, and our intention is to have it open to the public to enjoy since there are many Ginger Rogers fans. The house is located just a few blocks from the Truman Library and Museum and other tourist attractions. Tour buses often drive by the house and people stop to take pictures, so we know there is a public interest.  This was more important to us than just renting it out to someone or reselling it after it was renovated.

100 W Moore Street, Independence, MO
Birthplace of Ginger Rogers

Not long after the work to restore the house began, I was standing in the room where Ginger was born, and wondering what to do for the paint and décor. Suddenly, a foggy mist started to appear in front of the wall across from me and accumulate, finally in the shape of a woman in a long ball gown. I knew it was Ginger Rogers. I did not feel any fear, only amazement, as this is the last thing I was expecting.
Being a paranormal investigator, I knew that sometimes house renovations can stir up spirits, however, that was not on my mind at all.  I was concerned with doing the work to the house to make it structurally sound, ordering kitchen cabinets and appliances, and getting approval from the Heritage Commission to do work to the exterior. Since the house is an Historic Landmark Property, nothing can be changed on the exterior without approval from the commission first. The last thing on my mind was that the house might be haunted.

A couple of weeks later, I was meditating and decided to remote view the house. This is a process where I use my mind’s eye to travel to a location and look at it. It was late at night and very dark. I stood on the front lawn of the house looking at it when Ginger Rogers appeared again, standing next to the column to the left of the front steps to the porch. I took this as a sign that she approved of what we were doing.

Not long after that event, I received a call from Stephanie Turbeville with KC Paranormal. I had never met Stephanie before, but knew about her organization and she said she had read my books. Stephanie said she hoped I didn’t think she was crazy, but she was compelled to drive by the house the night before after completing an investigation elsewhere, and when she got out of the car she stood on the front lawn. Then the spirit of Ginger Rogers appeared standing next to the left column on the porch and smiled at her. It gave me chills, because that is exactly where Ginger appeared to me! At that point, I knew the Stephanie was the real thing, and that we should collaborate on investigating the house. I was so busy operating my several businesses that I turned most of the investigation over to KC Paranormal.

I invited the team to investigate the house on a Saturday night. We threw some chairs in the otherwise vacant house for everyone to sit on, and my brother and I joined Stephanie and her partner, Jan. We were in for much more than we expected. We all hoped to obtain evidence, but what occurred was nothing short of amazing.

During the 2 ½ hour investigation, we heard multiple voices come through the spirit box speaking in single words or at times phrases. One was definitely the voice of Ginger Rogers as we all recognized it. Another was an older woman, likely her mother Lela Rogers. Then we heard three different men speak as well, saying words like “basement” and “murder.”  The basement has a dirt floor and stone foundation walls. The thought that a murder may have occurred in the house sometime during its 105- year history, was unnerving. But Ginger seemed happy and thrilled we were there. She answered “Yes” when I asked if she wanted us to restore the house and open it to the public.
We heard a lot of noises coming from the basement and kitchen areas, saw multiple blue and white orbs moving about that were visible to the naked eye, and captured more orbs on film that were not visible. At one point, my brother, said “what the heck is that?” and pointed to a baseball-sized purple orb that came through the closed front door and moved to him. He held up one finger and the orb seemed to attach itself to his finger, remaining about 1” away. I then put my finger next to the orb and it followed my finger around for a minute, then took off and went back out the front door!  All four of us saw this occur and were all amazed. None of us had ever experienced anything like it.
At this point, Jan got out a digital flashlight which does not have a spring on it and can’t be tampered with. He set it on the floor and asked if Ginger Rogers was with us and if so, to turn on the light. The light turned on. Then he asked several questions, and to each one the flashlight turned on or off right on cue. None of us were near the flashlight, so no one could have tampered with it. This video is on the KC Paranormal You Tube channel.

Next, things got even weirder. I looked at the doorway to the second bedroom and saw a web-like bluish color structure forming, then faces appeared in this web. They were not human looking – but looked like aliens. I said nothing, hoping that someone else would see the same thing and would confirm what I was seeing. To my surprise, my brother, who rarely sees anything like this, said, “Guys, there are faces of aliens in that doorway.”  Stephanie and Jan moved to where they could see it, and they both saw the faces and web structure.

I took pictures with my FLIR camera and took a look at the photos the next day. In one picture, there is a blue web-like structure in the window in the kitchen, with a creepy looking alien type face in it. That was something none of us saw with the naked eye.

We are all very confused about the evidence obtained at the house. We get a very good vibe from Ginger and likely her mother, Lela. But these other entities are something else altogether, and the last thing any of us were expecting. I speculate that there may be some type of portal at that location and diverse types of entities are passing through. The area used to be Native American land, so perhaps that has something to do with it. The land wasn’t developed until the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The house was built sometime between 1909 and 1910, with the first renters in 1910, then Lela Rogers in 1911. After four years, Lela and Ginger moved out, and there have been many families who owned or rented the property since. One person contacted me who lived in the house for a year and he said nothing out of the ordinary occurred. Another person lived in the house for several years, and he said nothing happened that he knew about. Perhaps these entities were disturbed by the amount of work we did to repair the stone foundation walls, the floors, plumbing, electrical, doors and windows, and only came out during this process. Or perhaps they’ve been there all along, and the other people just were not aware of their presence.

KC Paranormal did a recent second investigation on their own and obtained yet more evidence of a haunting. I am eager to see what they captured on film and if any EVP’s were captured as well.
In all my over 1,100 investigations completed for others around the U.S., U.K. and South America in the past 40 years, I’ve never seen so much Paranormal evidence occur in such a brief period.  And of course, I own the house and must deal with it!
